Anorexia Men

There are many men who suffer from anorexia and other eating disorders. It is not unusual for men to suffer from anorexia. Over 1 million men have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, and over 7 million women have been diagnosed with anorexia or other eating disorder. Most people with anorexia are between the ages of 10 and 20 with the average being 17. There are some diagnosed younger although it is rare and there are some over the age of 20. Eating disorders have become a very real and serious disease because there are many more now than in the past. It has been reported that one in every 6 people with anorexia are men (or boys). They have a lot of peer pressure on them as much as women do. When they are teens they are many times interested in sports and in order to play their best and make the team they have to be thin and strong. They think that by dieting and doing excessive exercise they can become what they want to be. The problem is that some do not stop at their needed healthy weight. They continue to eat less and exercise and before they know it they are having health problems caused by the lack of food and strain on their body. While the men feel the need to compete they also have low self esteem so they develop the eating disorder to try to fix their problem. Men sometimes look at an eating disorder as a lack in masculinity so they are not apt to talk about it with anyone. They often feel that if they discuss the problem that they will be considered as being ‘gay’.

Cures for Anorexia and other eating disorders need to be found so the numbers of deaths and illnesses caused by them can decrease. There is just too much stress put on the public to be thin. Teens have a lot of peer pressure and some have low self esteem so they feel that they need to diet in order to become one of ‘the crowd’. There are many signs and symptoms of anorexia but the victim usually hides their condition until their health begins to fail them and they can no longer hide the situation. The disease has to be diagnosed by a doctor before any treatment can begin. The victim also has to want to be helped. There are physical and mental issues involved when someone is anorexic so there is a need for both medication , food, and psychological help. Anorexia causes damage to every organ in the body so if you know of someone you think may have an eating disorder, try to get them to seek the help of a doctor as soon as possible.
