Anorexia Statistics The statistics on anorexia may surprise you. There are more people suffering from anorexia that one might think. Research shows that about one percent of female adolescents have anorexia. That shows that about one out of every 100 females between the ages of 10 and 20 years old are starving themselves. There are even some cases of anorexia in younger and older people than this age group, it is just not very common. According to some surveys, there are about 10 percent of all people with anorexia are males. Yes, even males have anorexia, it is just not quite as common as it is with females. Researchers at Harvard University Medical School show data that up to 25 percent of adults with eating disorders are male. Anorexia cases in the western countries are greater than in other parts of the world. The average age for anorexia is 17 years old . About 40 percent of the latest cases of diagnosed anorexia are in girls ages 15 to 19 years old. Anorexia has increased in young women in the past forty years while the average in teenagers has not changed. It is stated that about 5 to 20 percent of the people who have anorexia will not survive because of the complications that come with it. No matter what the numbers are, it has been established that anorexia is a real problem for many people. There needs to be ways to prevent it before it gets to the point that complications set in and the person becomes very ill. If everyone could only spot the symptoms quicker and convince the victim to seek help before their bodies are harmed, it would save a lot of lives. The public needs to be more aware of the problem and try to do their part to help the victims. And that is exactly what they are, victims. They have come to believe that they need to lose a lot of weight to be included in the social circles, or to just feel better about themselves. They do not have any self esteem and do not realize that it is what is on the inside that counts and not on the surface. Some of the friendliest, most lovable people are overweight and they feel great about themselves because they know what really counts and they believe in themselves. Eating disorders have both mental and physical consequences and they need to be addressed before the victim is going to get better. Many times they do not want help until the damage to their body’s has already been done. If you think you might have an eating disorder, contact your doctor so they can help get you back on the road to recovery. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
