Anorexia Support Groups

There are anorexia and other eating disorder support groups across the country and in other countries. You can find the nearest one to you by doing a quick search on the internet or by talking to your doctor. There are also treatment centers across the United States and in Britain. The main concern is to seek help for yourself or loved ones who are suffering from anorexia as soon as possible in order to prevent severe damage to the body. Anorexia takes control of the body so it is hard for the victim to realize that they actually have a problem so they often hide the signs and symptoms as long as they can. They can sometimes hide the evidence until their health begins to fail them and they have to seek medical help. Then is it very important for the doctor to diagnose the disease for what it is. Sometimes anorexia is mistakenly diagnosed for some other medical problem so the necessary treatment is delayed. It is very important to try to get help for the anorexic victim as soon as possible because the longer they suffer the more damage that is done to the body. Anorexia can damage every vital part of the body, and even cause death, if it progresses and treatment is not received.

Anorexia is caused by different factors. There may be biological traits involved as well as psychological and sociocultural factors. The victim may have a family member who also has an eating disorder so genetics may play a part in it. Many people with anorexia have a low self esteem and/or peer pressure, social pressure, or abuse to add to the mix. We have to put a large part of the blame on our society because there is so much stress put on being ‘skinny’. We see skinny models on television, in magazines, on billboards, and even on the sides of some buses in some large cities. Many young minds are so influenced by the skinny models, actors, actresses, athletes, singers, and other celebrities that they look up to, that they feel they have to look like that too in order to succeed in life. Add this need with the low self esteem and other factors and you have a very dangerous combination. The public needs to be aware of just how dangerous anorexia and other eating disorders can be so we can all do our part and help someone if and when the need arises. Anorexia can affect anyone at any age but the majority of those who suffer from the disease are between the ages of 10 and 20 years old with the average being 17 years old.
