Statistics on Anorexia Nervosa To find some statistics on anorexia nervosa you just have to do a simple search on the internet and you can find statistics, charts, stories, testimonials, information, and even pictures. There is a lot of information online about anorexia and other eating disorders. Anorexia has been a problem for some very famous celebrities, models, and others. It is called the ‘celebrities disease’ by some. Anorexia and other eating disorders affect more than 8 million people across the nation. About one million of those diagnosed are males and the other seven million are females. Anorexia and other eating disorders affect mostly young people between the ages of 10 and 20 years old. The average age of those diagnosed are 17 years old. There are a few reported that are younger than 10 years old but they are rare and there are quite a few over the age of twenty with some being senior citizens. Eating disorders can happen at any age and for several reasons. Studies indicate that some of the reasons for anorexia and other eating disorders are low self esteem. Peer pressure, culture, possible genetics involved in some cases, unintentional weight loss after an illness or accident, get ridiculed because of over weight so the victim diets excessively and possibly exercises excessively. There may be a lot of peer pressure from fellow school mates or co-workers. There may be a member of the family who also has an eating disorder. When the public sees models, actors, actresses, musicians, and other celebrities that are skinny, some of them feel that they need to diet so they can be successful too. It is one thing to be slim and another to be too slim. Being severely underweight is just as dangerous to the health as being obese. The vital organs of the body are severely damaged and in some cases causes death if not diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. There have been famous people such as Karen Carpenter (famous singer of the 70's and 80's) who died from the complications of anorexia. She was only 32 years old when she had a heart attack. She had been receiving treatment and many thought she had beat the disease when she suffered the fatal heart attack. That is the main problem. There is major damage done to some of the vital organs of the body and some of the damage can not be reversed. Kate Moss (famous model) was accused as being anorexic and it is not known for a fact but she is thinner than her purse as some say. Daniel Johns famous singer from Australia suffered from anorexia and nearly died but sought treatment finally and recovered after a long battle. He even contemplated suicide. These are just a few of the many stories. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
