Stories of Anorexia There are many anorexia stories, charts, graphs, testimonials, pictures, and a lot of information online. All it takes is a quick search and you can find a lot about anorexia and other eating disorders. Scientists have done a lot more research on anorexia in the recent years after they realized it was a very serious disease involving many people. Anorexia was first described way back in 1684 and in 1870 it was described and diagnosed as a disease for the first time. For years after that there was not much study done on anorexia or other eating disorders. In the 1970's and 19'80's scientists decided anorexia was more of a problem than originally thought so they decided to do more study on it. It wasn’t until after the death of Karen Carpenter (famous singer in the 70's and 80's) in 1983. Karen was only 33 years old. She had been anorexic for a while and when she weighed only 85 pounds she collapsed on stage during a performance. It was then that she finally admitted she had a problem and sought treatment. After a while she began to gain her weight back and some people thought she had the long battle won but she was found unconscious by her mother in 1983. She had died from a sudden heart attack. The poor eating habits and damage to her vital parts were just too much for her heart. She was just one of many who have met their fate because of anorexia. There have been over eight million diagnosed cases of anorexia and other eating disorders. Of those eight million, one million were male and the rest female. It surprises some that there are that many male cases of eating disorders but men and boys have feelings too and they also have a lot of peer pressure and sometimes stress and low self esteem is all it takes for them to develop anorexia. The majority of the diagnosed cases were between the ages of 10 and 20 with the average being 17. There were a few under the age of 10 but they are rare. There are also some over 20 and some senior citizens. In fact the majority of deaths from anorexia are males over the age of 70. There are some very interesting stories about people, both celebrities and others, who have suffered at the hands of the anorexia disease. The stories break your heart but they also help some people realize that the disease is not to be taken lightly. If the victim does not seek help in time there may be too much damage to the vital organs for them to reverse the damage with treatment. The treatment will consist of several things. There will be a special diet, medications, and psychological help. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
