Information on Depression

Depression can be a very debilitating illness that you may not even realize you have if you do not have information on it. Many people go undiagnosed and suffer from depression. There is medications and therapy available for those who are suffering from depression. If you think you may have some form of depression, see your doctor and after a few tests and a few questions, the doctor can diagnose depression if it is there and will know which form of depression it is. They can then prescribe the proper treatment for the depression.

The different forms of cancer are bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, postpartum depression, and dysthymia. Other psychological disorders are: anxiety disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. These disorders often appear along with depression. Depression is not just a state of mind. It is a chemical imbalance and certain events in one’s life trigger the onset of depression. Some of the most common factors involved with depression are: Family history (hereditary) trauma or stress, pessimistic personality, and physical conditions. Studies show that about 16% of Americans will have some form of depression in their lifetime so you are not alone if you are suffering from depression. There are support groups you can join as well as take the prescribed medications or therapy the doctor gives you. Since there are so many depression medications it may take a trial of one or two before you can get the one that will help you. There are side effects with some of them and some of them work well for some but will not work for others because of our physical makeup. Work with your doctor until you find the right one for you. There are name brand and generic medications. There are also alternative medications you can take.

Some of the symptoms of depression are anxiety, restlessness, sleep disorder (sleeping too much or having trouble sleeping), eating disorder (eating too much or lack of appetite), rapid weight loss or gain (5 pounds or more per week), feeling tired and no energy, lack of concentration or cannot make decisions as you normally do, feeling sad, hopeless, worthless, or guilty, thoughts of suicide or death. There are four forms of treatment for depression and the doctor may suggest one or more of them. They are: Medication, Psychotherapy, Self care, and Electroconvulsive Therapy. Electroconvulsive Therapy is used when the patient can not use the medications, or have another severe illness. The medications sometimes have side effects so if the doctor cannot find one that does not give you side effects, they may suggest Electroconvulsive Therapy. The main thing here is that if you have one or more of the symptoms of depression, it is advisable to seek help as soon as possible. There is help for depression and the sooner you get that help, the sooner you will be back to your normal self.
