Postpartum Depression Symptom

If you believe you might be suffering from a postpartum symptom or symptoms, you might want to discuss it with your doctor. It is not unusual for a woman to get postpartum depression around two weeks after giving birth to a baby but it is also possible to have an onset of postpartum depression within a year after giving birth. Some researchers believe it is caused from hormonal changes going on in your body and with all of the changes and hassles of having a new baby to take care of, you can find yourself depressed and not realize it. Researchers seem to think there is a chemical imbalance in the brain of some people and different events in their lives cause the onset of depression. Women who are going through pregnancy, childbirth, adolescence, menapause, loss of a loved one, any major event or hormonal change in their lives can cause depression.

Some of the symptoms of postpartum depression are: lack of energy, tired a lot, irritable, have trouble concentrating or making decisions, may not meet the needs of the baby or able to give the baby affection, guilty feeling because they cannot do what they feel they should, low self esteem as a mother, If you are having one or more symptom for depression, contact your doctor. Having depression and a new baby is not good for the baby either. Researchers believe it may cause behavioral problems, problems with emotional bonding with others, lower activity level, sleep disorders, and distress. The baby may suffer as much as the mother so it is important that the mother get treated for their depression as soon as possible. There is no cure for depression but there is a lot of medications and therapy to control the symptoms so you can lead a normal life. Depression affects everyone around the one who has depression so it is not just getting help for yourself, you are helping everyone.

Along with the medications and/or therapy, there are also some self help things you can do if you are suffering from postpartum depression. You can join a support group of other mothers who are suffering from postpartum depression too. Together you all can help each other. You will see that there are many who are suffering from the same symptoms that you are. Some other things you can do is to find out everything you can about your condition, figure out what triggers your symptoms, track your symptoms, and set up a system to help you keep track of your medications. By keeping track of your symptoms (what you were doing, what time was it, were you eating, what were you eating, etc.) when you experienced the symptom so you can figure out what triggers them. It can help you work yourself through your depression.
