ALA supplement or better known as alpha lipoic acid is an enzyme that is found in the mitochondria, which is the energy producing source found in the cells of the body. It may be sold as a supplement as an antioxidant and combines with other antioxidants in the body. Some other antioxidants are vitamins C and E. Alpha lipoic acid is important for cellular production energy and as an antioxidant. The body makes enough alpha lipoic acid of its own but by taking extra it will help turn sugar and fat into energy and also as a water and fat soluble antioxidant. While some antioxidants work just in certain areas of the body, alpha lipoic acid works throughout the body. In some studies done, alpha lipoic acid increased the energy in the animals tested 3 times their normal energy level. Levels of other antioxidants were raised as well after they received the alpha lipoic acid. These were glutathione and abscorbic acid. It is thought that alpha lipoic acid may be doubly helpful in diabetic patients. Some have taken as much as 600 mg a day for treatment of diabetic neuropathy and had no serious side effects. It is also found in some natural weight loss products.

There has not been a lot of study done on most natural supplements but many people are now depending on them so help keep them healthy. Many people do not have health insurance and cannot afford the medical treatment they may need so they resort to the natural supplements. Some people just prefer the natural supplements because they contain no drugs and have much less side effects than the drugs (prescription or over the counter). The natural supplements are usually much cheaper than the drugs. Many doctors and scientists are beginning to see the significance of supplements and are recommending them to their patients. Most of the food we eat today contains little or no nutritional value so we need supplements to keep our body well balanced so it can fight off the nasty germs that invade our bodies. It is a good idea for everyone to take at least a multi vitamin daily to give your body the necessary vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients the body needs on a daily basis to function. As we age we may need extra calcium and other supplements to keep our body function like it should. Aging causes parts of the body to wear out and by taking supplements you may prolong your body and help keep you active much longer. If you are thinking of taking supplements and have a health issue and/or are taking medications or are pregnant or nursing you should discuss the supplements with your doctor before you use them.
