Found in South Africa in the Kalahari desert region, Hoodia has been used by the native tribes there for over an estimated 25,000 years. The tribesmen used it when they went on their hunting trips as an appetite suppressant. It was also used for indigestion and for minor infections.
Hoodia is a succulent plant, much like a cacti, in that it stores water in its roots, stems, and its leaves, therefore enabling it to grow in hot, dry areas. In fact it is a member of the cacti family. It has flowers that have a strong smell and are flesh colored. It is a pale green color and is a clump of upright stems found in a cluster. The plants are very hard to grow. The stems of the plants were used by the natives to curb their appetites when they were gone for days on their hunting trips.
Of the 13 Hoodia species, 12 of them are found in South Africa. Hoodia Gordonii is usually found only in South Africa and Namibia and the species of Hoodia are in rainfall areas of Namibia, Botswana, Angola, and other areas in Southern Africa.
In 1970, there became a scientific and commercial interest in the Hoodia plant. Up until them, it had been a mystery why the tribesmen always stayed slim. South Africa's National Lab studied for thirty years to find and isolate the active ingredient (P57 is what they are calling it) responsible for suppressing the appetite. It is also been found to lower the blood pressure.
The Scientists in Southern Africa applied for a pattent in 1997 and it has progressed from there. Many scientific studies have proven its effectiveness for suppressing your appetite and also lowering blood pressure. Another plus is that it has no known side effects.
The active ingredient (P57) has a direct effect on the part of the brain that controls many functions of the body. Some of those functions include hunger and appetite. When you eat, the blood sugar in your body rises and this part of your brain knows you have eaten and releases hormones that will give you a full feeling. Hoodia gives the brain the false feeling of a rise in blood sugar and sends the hormones making your body feel like it is full or that you have already eaten. This effect will keep you from eating as much as you normally do.
Hoodia is 100% all natural ingredients and has no known side effects. It is the most effective known plant on the market today to reduce the appetite. There are many companies out there today selling Hoodia. However, beware of the many fraudulent scams. There are many that are selling a false product. Make sure it is 100% pure Hoodia and nothing added to it. No preservatives, flavors, or other additives.
Hoodia also comes in different forms. There is the patch, pills, capsules for example. Plus it comes in different strengths to choose from.
